2026 Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is also evident elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
