Hazbin Hotel's Creator Reveals Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted viewers of the series at last received a much-anticipated backstory in the second season's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark extensive conversation and pose numerous inquiries about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears significantly stronger than any character before understood. These fresh disclosures include a glimpse into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The series creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for season 3. Additionally, she provided more insight into the process of creating the human versions of her infernal animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In the episode, a flashback reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the afterlife in advance to obtain a powerful role there. Rosie, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in return for his soul.
This raises the question: How is Rosie powerful enough to raise Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, leading into season 3,” the creator states. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The solution might be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the creator frequently remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she says holding off on specific information is an important part of maintaining season 2’s focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with demons, or stories that have mysteries, is providing people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I'm very excited.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The showrunner promises that the upcoming season will tackle the queries fans have been asking, like why Rosie commanded Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which diminished his power in Hell.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the origin story episode provides a further look into what the core cast of Sinner Demons appeared as as mortals, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era human form in the second episode. She explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of these personas hold so much weight,” she notes. “They vary from looking quite distinct from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between going with a design that represents the personality, as opposed to selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward creating something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair like that in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we believe the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and determine. I'm excited for fans to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
